I’m Dr. Janne B. Haugen, a fisheries ecologist researcher, marine policy specialist, and sustainability strategist with over a decade of experience bridging science, regulatory policy, and cross-sector engagement. My work focuses on turning complex social-ecological challenges into practical, actionable solutions that support resilient ecosystems, sustainable ocean use, and evidence-based decision-making.
I previously worked as a Fisheries Ecologist in support of NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center, where I led and contributed to research and policy efforts on fisheries management, highly migratory species, and ecosystem-based management. I am currently the Development Director for SeaShare— the fishing industry’s response to bycatch waste and food hunger.
Throughout my career, I have led interdisciplinary research teams, advised international scientific advisory groups, and facilitated workshops that bring together policymakers, scientists, industry, and communities. My work spans ecosystem-based management, fisheries management, coastal policy and management in response to climate change, offshore wind, bycatch, and highly migratory species.
Originally from Norway, I hold a BSc from the University of South-Eastern Norway (including a semester at Prescott College in Arizona), an MSc from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and a PhD from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST). Before pursuing a scientific career, I served in the infantry of the Norwegian Army—an experience that shaped my collaborative, solutions-focused, and disciplined approach to leadership.
In addition to my research, policy, and non-profit work, I’m available for consulting and advisory roles. I currently serve as an expert member and external advisor to The Monterey Bay Seafood Watch Technical and Advisory Committee, The Arctic Council’s Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment Group (PAME), The Marine Ecosystem-Based Management Progress Evaluation Group (MEBM-PEG), The Responsible Offshore Science Alliance (ROSA), and various NOAA Fisheries and ICES working groups.
You can download pdf’s of all my peer-reviewed research articles here and order my textbook, Marine Ecosystem-Based Management here.
Outside of work, I’m passionate about being in and on the water. I enjoy spearfishing, hiking Rhode Island’s coastline, and teaching yoga.
